Weddings at St George's

We believe marriage is a gift from God.

Everyone who lives in the parish of St George's may be married here. However, you can also marry in a church that has special significance for you, as well as your own parish church. Persons wishing to be married should be over 18 (16, with parental consent) and not closely related.

The Church of England believes that marriage is for life. But it recognises that, sadly, some marriages do fail. In exceptional circumstances, the Church accepts that a divorced person may marry again.

At St George's we would love to host your special day here in our historic church. To talk through the possibilities of getting married at St George's Church, please contact us.

Baptisms and Thanksgiving

If you wish to give thanks for the birth of your baby, a service of Thanksgiving may be what you are looking for. In it we pray for God's blessing on your baby or child and give thanks to God for their birth.

We also baptise people of all ages, children and adults, following Jesus’ command that those who believe in him should be baptised. Baptism marks the beginning of a journey with Jesus that continues throughout our life, so it is a very important and serious undertaking. In it we respond to God’s love for us, by saying that we will follow him- we promise to turn away from evil and turn towards Jesus.

Baptism preparation is usually arranged for those who are being baptised or, in the case of infants, for the Godparents and parents. It is usual for the family to come to church for a few weeks to see what it is all about before the baptism is arranged, and to continue to be part of the church following the baptism.

Funerals at St George's

A special place to say goodbye

We understand that following the death of a loved one, there are so many things to think about. We are here to help. Funerals and memorial services can be held in St George’s.

The Vicar will listen to you and help you plan a fitting service that honours your loved one. We work closely with the local funeral directors and will do everything we can to walk alongside you in this time.
